The uninformed shopper is but a stone’s throw away from getting saddled with subpar goods and a painfully lighter wallet to show for them. Read on to know better!

What Is Certification?

First things first, let’s get the basics down pat. A diamond certificate (diamond grading report, diamond dossier or diamond quality document) is an unbiased professional report furnished by a gemological laboratory attesting to the various attributes of a diamond including its dimensions, cut, clarity, colour, carat weight, symmetry, polish, fluorescence and so on.

It certifies that the diamond has undergone a thorough appraisal by seasoned experts using industry grade machinery, to carefully determine the quality of its characteristics as accurately as possible.

Why Is It So Important?

Most individual jewellery enthusiasts, without professional training in the field of gemology, have no way of personally confirming whether the actual quality of a diamond corresponds with the information that the supplier chooses to divulge.

As such, having an independent third party’s authentication is surefire proof that you aren’t left in the dark when it comes to your diamond. Thus, a diamond certificate serves as a blueprint to its true value and identity.

What Is Diamond Grading?

Gemological institutions around the world adhere to different grading scales and terminologies to denote the quality of each attribute of a diamond. Based on the grades assigned to the gemstone’s characteristics, one is able to gauge the overall quality of the stone. The most popular grading scale for the 4Cs was introduced by The Gemological Institute of America (GIA). This is currently an internationally recognized, industry wide grading technique followed by the vast majority of gemologists.

Which Are The Trusted Grading Laboratories?

There are plenty of highly acclaimed institutions across the planet dedicated to conducting research in the field of gemology, providing gemstone identification, jewellery certification and diamond testing services as well as furnishing diamond grading reports.

Founded in 1931, GIA is the largest, oldest and most noteworthy gemological institution in the world, dedicated to conducting research and hosting educational programs in the field of jewellery arts and gemology. GIA’s International Diamond Grading System conceived in 1953 has been widely embraced throughout the industry. This scale assigns grades to the 4Cs (colour, cut, clarity and carat) and accordingly appraises the quality of diamonds based thereon. Headquartered in California, GIA operates from 13 facilities worldwide till date.

AGS was founded in the year 1934 and is currently headquartered in Las Vegas. It is an alliance of suppliers, retail jewellers, gemologists, jewellery appraisers and a select few members within the industry. Among other related services, AGS specializes in diamond grading and has even introduced its own grading scale to assess the clarity, colour and cut of diamonds. In 1996, its affiliate the American Gem Society Laboratories (AGSL) was founded. Most recently, the American Gem Society Advanced Instruments Division was established in 2004.

Based in Belgium and founded in 1976, HRD is a world class diamond grading laboratory with an extremely stringent colour and clarity grading scale. Although its razor sharp standards are at par with those of GIA, it has limited recognition in the United States but is highly distinguished within the European markets. Being tremendously accurate and consistent with its diamond grading services, HRD is considered by most to be a competent alternative to GIA’s certification scheme.

SGL is one of the leading gemological laboratories in the United Kingdom. It specializes in providing unbiased and accurate gemstone and diamond identification and grading services. SGL’s certification scheme is backed by unrivalled expertise and cutting edge technology to preserve the integrity of the jewellery industry and uphold consumer interest. Through extensive research and development in the field of jewellery arts, SGL is considered to be a veritable treasure trove of knowledge to help buyers make informed decisions with their purchases.

IGI is an internationally recognized institution founded in 1975 in Antwerp and is committed to conducting research in the sphere of gemology and hosting educational programs for consumers and professionals alike. It also provides accurate and reliable reports attesting to the authenticity of diamonds. With a league of highly trained professionals using state of the art machinery, each diamond is thoroughly scrutinized to carefully assess its traits. IGI’s certification was conceptualized to provide a very comprehensive and precise analysis of diamonds for quality assurance. Having expanded its scope exponentially, IGI has operating laboratories in Hong Kong, New York, Tokyo, Mumbai, Bangkok, Toronto, Los Angeles, Dubai, Tel Aviv, Kolkata, amongst several others.
